Freedom Begins Where Unnecessary Holding Ends

Much of what limits us is not a lack of effort.

It is effort we no longer realize we are making.

The body braces.
Emotion becomes held.
Attention contracts.
Habitual patterns become so familiar that we mistake them for ourselves.

The internal arts teach us to perceive these patterns, release what is unnecessary, and restore greater coherence throughout the whole person.

When this happens, something remarkable becomes possible:

the body and mind regain freedom to organize themselves more intelligently.

In training, this freedom becomes effortless movement, internal power, sensitivity and resilience.

In healing, it creates the conditions for release, reintegration, emotional freedom and renewed capacity.

This is Phoenix Mountain's deeper work.

INTERNAL ARTS TRAINING

Becoming stronger without becoming harder.

Tai Chi and Qigong are often taught as forms to memorize.

My work begins beneath the form.

We develop the internal conditions that allow the body to become connected, responsive and powerful without relying on excessive muscular tension.
Training explores principles such as:
· Song — releasing unnecessary effort
· Rooting and grounding
· Peng and whole-body pressure
· Fascia and elastic connection
· Tingjin and refined awareness
· Internal movement and Neijin
· Fajin and power expression
· Qigong and Neigong
· Martial application

The goal is not simply to become better at performing Tai Chi.

It is to develop a body that becomes increasingly coherent, adaptive and free.

QIGONG HEALING

Restore the Freedom to Reorganize

We naturally move toward coherence when nothing prevents us from doing so.

Yet experience can leave patterns of holding throughout the person—physical tension, emotional contraction, rigid mental patterns, diminished awareness, or parts of ourselves we gradually stop sensing and inhabiting.

Qigong healing begins by listening.

Through a deeply coherent state of awareness, the practitioner perceives where freedom and integration have been diminished.

Rather than forcing change, the work helps bring awareness and connection into these areas so unnecessary holding can release.

As greater freedom returns, the body's own intelligence has more possibility to reorganize itself.

This process may involve:

Release
· Letting go of unnecessary physical, emotional and mental holding.

Re-expansion
· Restoring space where awareness, movement or perception has contracted.

Reintegration
· Bringing neglected or disconnected regions of the body and experience back into relationship with the whole.

Coherence
· Cultivating states in which body, awareness, emotion and intention become increasingly aligned.

Fulfillment
· Helping the person reconnect with states of meaning, gratitude, vitality and deeply cherished values.

Healing is therefore not something simply done to another person.

It is a relationship in which the practitioner's coherence helps reveal greater possibilities for coherence within the person receiving the work.

One Principle. Different Expressions.

At first, Tai Chi training and healing may appear to be very different practices.

At their deepest level, they ask remarkably similar questions.

Where are you holding unnecessarily?

Where has awareness become diminished?

Where has connection been lost?

Where are you opposing forces that could instead be received?

And what becomes possible when that opposition ends?

In Tai Chi, releasing unnecessary holding allows force to pass through the body, establishes root, creates Peng and makes effortless power possible.

In healing, the same principle can reveal physical, emotional and cognitive patterns that have become contracted or isolated and create the opportunity for them to release and reintegrate.

Both practices move toward the same underlying condition:

greater coherence with less unnecessary opposition.

What Does "Energy" Mean

In Qigong traditions, healing is often described as transmitting or directing Qi.

There is another useful way to understand the experience.

When one person is deeply settled, aware and coherent, their presence can help another person perceive and reorganize states that were previously difficult to access.

Attention changes.

Breathing changes.

Holding becomes perceptible.

Areas that felt absent can return to awareness.

Emotional patterns can soften.

The whole system may gain possibilities that were previously unavailable.

What is traditionally called energy transmission can therefore also be understood as a profound form of connection between states of greater and lesser coherence.

We do not need to reduce one explanation to the other.

What matters is the experience:

greater awareness creates greater freedom—and greater freedom creates new possibilities for healing.

Healing is More Than Returning to Baseline

The deeper aim is not merely the absence of discomfort.

As unnecessary contraction releases, we can regain the capacity to experience more of ourselves and more of life.

Awareness expands.
The body feels more inhabitable.
Emotion becomes less defended.
Possibility returns.

And ultimately, practice can cultivate something even more resilient than comfort:
the capacity for gratitude.

Gratitude for what is.

Gratitude for what has been.

Gratitude for what may yet become.

This does not mean denying difficulty.

It means becoming sufficiently whole that
even difficulty no longer excludes us from the fullness of being alive.

August Lin

August Lin is the founder of Phoenix Mountain and a lifelong practitioner and teacher of the Chinese internal arts.

Beginning his training at age ten, his studies have included Tai Chi, Qigong, Neigong, internal martial arts, cultivation and traditional healing practices.

His work explores a central question across all of these disciplines:

What becomes possible when unnecessary opposition is removed and the human system is allowed to organize itself more naturally?

With a background in engineering, August is known for translating traditionally difficult internal concepts into direct, experiential principles that students can feel and investigate for themselves.

Today, he works privately with students and healing clients and teaches courses, workshops and retreats through Phoenix Mountain.

Testimonials

“I signed up for the [Fascia Mastery] course. At first, I was a little skeptical. I just finished lesson 4 and for me I think it's worth every penny. To be honest, I learned from a Sifu for 10 years and have never had this kind of knowledge. Thanks, Sifu Lin.”

“August brought me back to life. My family and I are forever grateful to him. When I met August I was physically and emotionally exhausted. I was diagnosed with 2 autoimmune diseases in 2021 Unable to walk without assistance and care for myself and family, I had lost hope. August guided me through thoughts and feelings I had buried deep down. These same thoughts and feelings had always held me back from moving forward in life. August was very easy to talk to. He is kind and patient. I walk out of our sessions feeling happy and confident. 7 months later I am walking, driving, cooking and watching my 8 year old play soccer. After one particular game, I was finally able to lineup with the other parents and make a tunnel for the kids to run through something I was unable to do in the past. The smile on my daughter‘s face was priceless. As we walked away from the soccer field, I expressed to my daughter, how happy I was to be able to do the parent tunnel and her response was “thanks to August” my 8 year old witnessed all the progress I made. ”

“It is a great boon to humanity when that rare Teacher arrives who is able to communicate complex topics and distinctions in a clear, simple and organized way that leads to RESULTS. This is so evident in several ways: First, in the comments section of your videos, especially from advanced students who have been on the path for a long time and yet finally understand how to incorporate and utilize internal power, which had previously just been a concept or abstraction for them. Second, by the level of detail in your training videos, where you are integrating and synthesizing so many different principles, many of which I had never come across despite being in the Qigong and energy healing arena for a long time now. They have been well-kept secrets indeed....until now ! Lastly, by your personal example you embody the principles of psycho-spiritual integration that develops as a result of deep internal practices, things which include kindness, generosity, and a keen intellect. Thank you Shifu Lin.”
